Watch Rules
You finally got the watch you always wanted. Maybe it's gold with all kinds of extras and just makes you feel fuzzy inside or is just plain cool. Now you have to worry about taking care of it. Well don't get all bothered about it Junior, we're going to give you some tips so your ticker keeps on ticking.
First off let's just say that maintaining your watch will keep it running more accurately and longer. Without regular maintenance you run the risk of not only an inaccurate piece but turning your nice watch into nothing more than a really wide bracelet. So keeping up with a watch maintenance schedule is important.
Water and heat are the two biggest problems associated with rust inside of your watch. Even if your watch is water-resistant, make sure you put your watch in a position where it does not have to resist anything. Water resistant is not the same as water proof. If water gets inside of your watch, it's pretty much a given you will be down at the local watch-smith's shop for a cleaning session.
Remove your watch if you feel like you are going to be engaging in activities where you watch might become wet, such as a steam bath, scuba diving in the Alps or whatever crazy water thing you have planned. If your watch becomes exposed to salt water, rinse it and let dry.
Here's an odd tip, but it really does make sense; do not change the date on your watch within three hours of midnight. This has nothing to do with Gremlins who you are not supposed to feed after midnight, but with the gears inside the watch. The watch at this point is gearing up (get it?) to change the date internally during this time and you changing the date yourself interferes with this. Any other time is a fine time to change the date.
Even automatic watches should be wound twice a week or so. The reason for this being is to help push the oils inside around a little better. Without the oils the gears will lag or get hung up. The result could mean that you miss Aunt Millie's tea party or something along those lines. So wind 'er up on Sundays or something.
Mechanical watches require the same thing more children do; consistency. It is a good idea to wind your watch every morning. The internal mechanism of the mechanical complexities makes it so that they need to be wound on a regular basis, but not a lot. The irony is that people who do not want to be late and are habitual watch winders (two or three times a day) tend to wear out their watches and then complain that their "piece of junk" will not work. If they had wound the watch just once in the morning they could have saved themselves a lot of hassle.
Schedule some quality time with the ones you love, but also schedule some time with the local watch repair guy for maintenance. This is very important. He will clean and fix your watch so that even if it's not broken, it won't become so. Preventive maintenance is where it's at on watches, so get with the times.
