Silver Remains Favorite for New Car Colors

Silver has remained the favored new car color choice in North America for the ninth consecutive year. 2009 Survey results show that 57% of new cars sold this year have been either silver, black or white.

This year is the ninth consecutive year that silver has topped the list of favored colors for new cars. The silver paint used by car makers today is much more advanced than the paint that was used when this color first became popular. Technological improvements in paint and spray technology have enabled car makers to significantly expand their paint palettes.

Although silver, black and white remain firm favorites with new car buyers the Ford car company have had succes with varied eye catching colors including Molten Orange and Grabber Blue. The new, subcompact Ford Fiesta that will arrive in the US next year will be available in a range of vibrant, bright colors including bright green and red as well as the popular silver, black and white.

Around 37% of the small car in Europe, where the market for this size is very strong, tend to be more varied in their colors using reds, green, brown and blue.

Auto manufacturers have also become far more interested in making their interiors more attractive by using accent colors. There are new paints, being introduced by car makers, that include glass particles that make the paint shimmer and shine.

Its well known that different colors can have a psychological influence. Red, for example, has been said to stimulate the body and mind whereas blue is believed to have a calming, soothinig effect. But many psychologists view color therapy with some skepticism.

Fifteem years ago only 1% of new cars were silver in color with the most popular color choice at that time being green. Color fashions come and go making it impossible to accurately predict the next hot trend.
